Mentech Innovation: Emotion-Intelligent Robot System for people with impaired cognition

Europe’s ageing population is putting a strain on healthcare, with increasing cognitive decline and a shortage of caregivers leading to heightened risks of loneliness, depression, and anxiety among the elderly. In response, a pioneering solution is emerging from a Dutch-Norwegian collaboration: an emotionally intelligent robotic system that enhances patient care while supporting healthcare workers.

The system, created through a partnership between Mentech (NL), SARA (NL), VitalThings (NOR) and the University of Bergen (NOR), will use Emotional Intelligence (EI) technology to assess and respond to the emotional states of patients. By combining real-time data with personalized profiles, these robots will deliver customized interactions, alleviating healthcare staff’s workload and improving patient well-being. This innovation promises a future where technology enhances human-centered care, setting a new standard for the industry.

Subsidy scheme: Eurostars

The Eurostars subsidy helps European companies that collaborate internationally in innovative Research and Development (R&D) projects by reducing the risk of innovation. The Eurostars subsidy supports innovative small and medium enterprises (SMEs), making it one of the more accessible European innovation subsidies. The Ministry of Economic Affairs allocates €22 million annually for the Eurostars program, divided across two calls per year.
